ABOUT
Stay tuned as we update the site. There will be interviews recounting people's stories of meeting Muhammad, blog posts, pictures, videos and more. As the collection grows, we will dedicate pages to different cities. Many will know of Muhammad Ali fighting in London, but what about the marriage ceremony that was performed in a South Shields mosque, or the Ovaltine promotion tour of 1971 that saw him in supermarkets across the nation? Maybe we will uncover some little known gems. If you aware of a trip that has not been recorded, get in touch!
The Muhammad Ali in the UK project is run by Haseeb Khan. Haseeb is a PhD researcher at Manchester Metropolitan University. His PhD explores Muslim communities in North West England from around 1870-1950. Haseeb has a lifelong love of Muhammad Ali, and Muhammad Ali in the UK is a passion project.
I am grateful for the many sources of support for the project. The Social History Society who have helped get it off the ground with a BME Small Grant, friends and colleagues at Manchester Metropolitan University who have responded with enthusiasm and appreciated feedback, the friendships and connections that I have made with people who have generously shared their stories of Muhammad in their cities, and their love for him, and of course the constant love and support of my family.
